Dr John Arden is an educator, clinician and prolific writer on topics about mental health, and we were fortunate to catch up with him to chat about his new book Mind-Brain-Gene. He’s the author of 15 books (translated into 20 languages) including, Brain2BrainThe Brain Bible, Rewire Your Brain, and Brain-Based Therapy with Adults.  His new book is entitled Mind-Brain-Gene: Toward the Integration of Psychotherapy.  He recently retired from Kaiser Permanente where he served as the Northern California Regional Director of Training where he developed one of the largest mental health training programs in the United States. In this capacity he oversaw more than 150 interns and postdoctoral psychology residents in 24 medical centres. He has presented in all US States and 25 countries.

We have broken our conversation up into two parts as we spoke for over an hour about a range of topics involving the multidimensional aspects of mental wellbeing, so be sure to listen to both podcasts!

In this conversation we talk about the necessity for mental health practitioners to have a multidisciplinary perspective on the human condition and to be prepared to never stop learning. We are the ultimate complex system and to understand what John calls a non-linear multidimensional evolving phenomena, we have to be prepared to study the whole person, with all their systems, in context. No small task! But John has given us a great introduction in his work, and now concentrated in his latest book Mind-Brain-Gene.

I’m sure you will enjoy listening to John as much as we enjoyed talking to him!

Thanks for listening!
